Joel Terry, LPC (Clinical Supervisor & Co-Founder)

Joel Terry

I have been in clinical practice since 2010, spanning both community mental health and university settings. Within my experience at the university I was provided the opportunity to supervise clinicians since 2014 who were at varying levels of clinical skills and licensure. The types of supervision included clinicians entering their first practicum, providing group supervision to interns/post-docs, and individual supervision to provisionally licensed clinicians seeking independent licensure. I have loved the experience of being able to support a clinician’s growth in the field of counseling and find it incredibly rewarding and am excited to do so within our group practice.

My supervision style follows the Integrative Developmental Model. This allows me to assess a clinician’s strengths and growth edges while allowing for simultaneous reinforcement of clinical skill and support in learning new interventions. An undercurrent of my work with supervisees is following and modeling the leadership styles of Stephen Covey, John Maxwell, and Simon Sinek, which focuses on ensuring our clinicians needs are taken care of and they feel supported in their professional identity and goals, which translates into excellent client care.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC-16422) and obtained my Masters degree in Counseling from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and my Bachelors in Psychology from Arizona State University.

Testimonials from former supervisees:

“I had the opportunity to experience clinical supervision from Joel Terry for independent licensure at a university counseling center for two years, and eagerly continued supervision with Joel at The Center for Strengthening Relationships for a third year. Joel is highly skilled in the practice of supervision, providing guidance and support in a way where I could openly and safely explore clinical and professional growth. I consider myself lucky to have had an excellent supervisor in Joel who modeled competence, ethics, professionalism, clinical expertise. Joel’s sensitivity to my needs as a counselor allowed me to navigate challenging, ethical client issues as well as transference and countertransference in my work as a counselor. I had the privilege of experiencing Joel’s style of supervision that included a compassionate approach where I further developed my therapist identity and confidence. Joel delivered feedback that helped me think critically, try new techniques, and trust in my therapeutic skills. With Joel’s approach, I was able to grow past my own anxieties in live supervision to be my best counselor self. Joel is a strong supervisor and I am so fortunate to be a stronger counselor today thanks to his supervision throughout my journey.

Thank you Joel, for offering yourself to supervision and caring so deeply about the counselor’s experience. You truly are a one-of-a-kind supervisor.”

“I have worked for Joel Terry at Center for Strengthening Relationships for the two best years of my professional career. Joel is a wonderful supervisor. He is profoundly kind as well as highly professional. He listens with compassion to his employees concerns and perspectives, and provides insightful and helpful advice about any clinical dilemma or concern a therapist may encounter. I found I could be my best when working for Joel; he is talented in nurturing a therapist’s talents and skills, while gently guiding the therapist to consider other options and/or perspectives when necessary. I could not recommend Joel at the Center for Strengthening Relationships enough. If you desire a supervisor who loves to teach, has a deeply kind and thoughtful approach, and has excellent clinical knowledge and skill, you could not find a better supervisor. I am deeply grateful to have found the Center for Strengthening Relationships, owned and supervised by Joel Terry.

“Joel is an incredible counselor and colleague. He was a member of the training committee while I was on internship and post-doc and he was always one of the people I felt most comfortable going to with questions, especially about anything tech related! Everyone at the clinic turned to him with questions about our electronic medical record at the time. He supervised me co-facilitating groups and was an excellent co-leader. He was patient, compassionate, and always had a way of explaining things in a relatable manner. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more down-to-earth, humble, and uplifting colleague than Joel. His upbeat, can-do attitude is infectious. He’s an awesome team player and I’m grateful to have worked with him at ASU Counseling Services.”
