Tehrina Terry, LPC (Therapist & Co-Founder)
It can feel very vulnerable and it takes courage to begin therapy. I recognize and honor this by providing a safe environment for your healing journey. I bring compassion to each session, and when needed, a gentle nudge to encourage your growth. I believe in the resilience of the human spirit and your ability to overcome adversity.
I am person-centered, strength-based, and interpersonal in my work with my clients, and I use a mix of therapeutic modalities such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gottman Method, Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic, Existentialism (Meaning-Making), and Psycho-Education.
However, research shows that more important than the therapeutic modality used is the therapeutic relationship, which is why my main approach is Interpersonal, and the relationship between you and I is the first thing I develop in our work together, as it is the foundation from which change happens. Those I work with know that I am always on their team, rooting for them, and believing in their ability to change and grow. I feel that I am given a very sacred trust when another human shares the stories and experiences of their life with me, and I treat that with the utmost respect.
When we are in emotional distress, we often feel a sense of disconnection, not only with those around us, but from ourselves. This is painful because it is human nature to need to feel connection. This is why I also work to help you develop a strong relationship with yourself, so that you can recognize, trust, and honor your needs. This then allows you to create what Martin Luther King Jr. referred to as “beloved community,” as you begin to develop healthy and strong relationships with friends, partners, colleagues, and family. To achieve this, I often work with people to develop healthy communication skills, as well as to gain insight into relationships that are unhealthy so they can set necessary boundaries.
I am grateful for the privilege of working along side others like me, who are on the path of healing and wholeness.
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” – Carl Rogers
About Me
I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Arizona (LPC-15351). I received my Masters of Counseling from Arizona State University, and I have worked in both community and university settings prior to private practice. Additionally, I continually attend professional conferences and seminars to further strengthen my clinical skills. I have been trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which is a powerful therapy I use in my work with couples.
My Specialties
Couples:
Loving, securely attached relationships are a key element of life satisfaction. In fact, many studies point to the high correlation between healthy, loving relationships and improved life satisfaction. Due to this, I have made relational work the cornerstone of my practice, and I have been trained in EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), which is a therapeutic style that focuses on deepening/rekindling the emotional connection.
LGBTQ+:
I work extensively with individuals and couples who identify as LGBTQ+ providing a safe, non-judgmental space for growth and healing.
Non-traditional Relationships:
I also work with people in non-traditional relationships such as ethical non-monogamy (ENM).
Sexual Abuse Survivors:
I work with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse as well as survivors of sexually abusive relationships. Among other modalities, I use Internal Family Systems, sometimes referred to as “Parts Work”, and I have also been trained in EMDR and use some elements of this modality to inform my practice.
